A U.S. seafood industry fair-trade organization created by the National Fisheries Institute and its members has officially changed its name to the Better Seafood Board.

According to an NFI spokesperson, the name change — from its former moniker, the Better Seafood Bureau — was to avoid confusion about any affiliation with the Better Business Bureau, an organization that sets standards for integrity and ethical performance by U.S.- and Canadian-businesses.

The BSB board approved the name change last week.

The BSB was formed in 2007 to stamp out economic fraud in the seafood industry. Although operated separately from NFI, all NFI members are required to sign a pledge to not sell seafood that is short weight or count, that has the wrong species name or origin, or that has been transshipped to circumvent import tariffs.

Armed with a call center, the BSB provides industry supply chain partners — restaurants, retailers and other seafood buyers — to report instances of economic fraud.
