WSI launches 2019 video competition
The International Association for Women in the Seafood Industry (WSI) launched its latest video competition this week, which aims to build on the success of the previous two years.
“Men, women, groups and institutions are all welcome to submit a short film, no longer than 4 minutes, which portrays observations or experiences of woman involved in the seafood industry,” said WSI founder Marie Christine Monfort.
The brief is wide open, with the organisers hoping to attract entries from women involved in fishing, aquaculture, processing, local fish selling and international trading, quality management, certification, teaching, learning, or any of the wide range of services related to the industry.
“We started the competition in 2017 and were so pleased with the level of interest and the quality of the films, that we ran it again last year. Now we have many more people wanting us to publicise their work, and we are looking forward to viewing a bumper crop of entries,” Monfort said.
WSI was formed to highlight the important contribution of women to the seafood industry, to raise awareness of gender issues, and to promote professional equality between men and women. It has a particular interest in promoting young female professionals, who will be the leaders of tomorrow.
“One seafood worker in two is a woman; they are essential contributors to the industry, but many remain invisible,” Monfort said.
The video competition is being run with technical support from MATIS, Iceland, and sponsorship from the French Development Agency (AFD) and the International Association of Fisheries Inspectors (IAFI).
Three top three videos will be selected by an international panel of judges, with the overall winner taking home EUR 1,000 (USD 1,133) and two runners up receiving EUR 500 (USD 567) each.
Entries must be submitted by 2 August, 2019, and full details can be found at https://womeninseafood.com/.
