The International Pole and Line Foundation (IPNLF)has  welcomed major tuna supplier and tuna brand developer Tri Marine as one of its newest supply chain members, the non-profit association announced on 22 April.

The privately-owned Tri Marine, which got its start as a business back in 1972 in Singapore, has grown into one of the largest tuna supply companies in the world, and is “recognized as a leader in sustainable and socially responsible fishing and processing,” IPNLF said.

The vertically-integrated company’s global operations include National Fisheries Developments Ltd, a Solomon Islands subsidiary that owns and operates both pole-and-line and purse seine fishing vessels. Tri Marine also holds two Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certifications for tuna, including one that covers the Solomon Islands pole-and-line fishery, and is a TUNACONS Fisheries Improvement Project (FIP) participant in the Eastern Pacific Ocean.

“Tri Marine’s mission to provide sustainable, high-quality products to tuna markets around the world aligns well with IPNLF’s work in supporting one-by-one tuna fisheries. We’re proud to be their partner in efforts to support a sustainable tuna industry,” Renato Curto, CEO of Tri Marine Group, said regarding the company’s new IPNLF status.

“Tri Marine leads by example, showing how a modern seafood business should operate with regards to its environmental and social commitments,” added Martin Purves, Managing Director of IPNLF. “The company continues to lead in the development of sustainable initiatives, while also striving to bring out the best in the broader supply chain through strong collaboration with other engaged stakeholders from across the private, public and non-profit sectors. IPNLF looks forward to working even closer with Tri Marine to progress the sustainable and equitable future of the one-by-one tuna sector.”

IPNLF consists of a growing network of tuna supply chain stakeholders from all over the world that are working to enhance the supply of one-by-one caught tuna, as well as strengthen the value that these fisheries bring to the coastal environments and communities connected to them, the nonprofit explained.

During this week’s Seafood Expo Global / Seafood Processing Global event in Brussels, Belgium, IPNLF representatives are joining forces with the Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF), the Asosiasi Perikanan Pole & Line dan Handline (AP2HI), the Swiss Import Promotion Programme (SIPPO), and UNIDO's SMART-Fish Program for a networking reception on Wednesday, 25 April, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., to discuss the future for Indonesia's fisheries, including new opportunities to progress the one-by-one tuna sector.

IPNLF will be exhibiting at the exposition from 24 to 26 April in Hall 11 at stand #11-2341.
