Transparency of Transshipment: Emerging Technology Can Shine a Light on the Transfer of Fish At Sea
Information:
Description:
Each year, thousands of fishing vessels transfer fresh catch to refrigerated cargo vessels, or carriers, as a way to improve efficiency. But this practice, a vital part of the global fishing industry and seafood supply chain, is often hard to monitor and regulate at sea. And although the practice is legal throughout much of the ocean, ineffective monitoring and control of transshipment creates opportunities for illegally caught seafood to enter the supply chain. To help increase the visibility of these activities, Global Fishing Watch and The Pew Charitable Trusts have launched the Carrier Vessel Portal, a public website that aims to increase the overall transparency of this practice. Join both organizations for a walk-through of the portal, and learn how its use of vessel tracking and machine learning technology can be used to better manage and track transshipment activities worldwide.
