Social Responsibility, Alaska’s Proactive, Global-Reaching Approach
Information:
Description:
Translating a Culture of Responsibility to Certification.
Seafood sustainability encompasses both environmental and social responsibility. The increased awareness by businesses and consumers around the social/human element of supply chains has resulted in different labor standards being developed and many companies expanding their environmentally sustainable seafood sourcing policies to include social responsibility commitments.
During this webinar we will hear from a diverse panel representing multi-generational family fishing, indigenous fishing practices, industrial fishing fleets, and land-based operations. We will hear from the international customer perspective and gain a better understanding of why having transparent systems and policies is so important. A representative from the Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI) will share more about their collaboration with the Sustainable Supply Chain Initiative (SSCI) of the Consumer Goods Forum, and the seafood-specific social benchmark tool that was developed. Finally, we will explore the role of certification and importance of having standards that acknowledge a ‘one size fits all’ approach is not realistic.
Social responsibility is a complex topic with different areas of focus globally. As a state that has been fishing for generations with long-standing traditions and cultural customs, Alaska has been celebrated for its sustainable seafood and robust fisheries management practices which recognize the importance of transparency at all levels. Join us for this webinar to learn more about the Alaska seafood industry’s culture of responsibility, commitment to upholding traditions while demonstrating responsible social and labor practices, and its part in the global discussions moving this evolving topic forward for the benefit of all fisheries.
