The virtual THRIVE Canada Challenge culminated with ThisFish Inc. taking home top billing in the ag-tech startup category, beating out eight other firms for the title.

Hosted by AgriFood investment and innovation platform THRIVE SVG Ventures, the competition is geared toward selecting the best start-up for future investment and global recognition.

A developer of seafood traceability and production software, ThisFish has a mission of improving “profits and sustainability in the seafood industry through digitization, traceability and innovation,” according to its website. The start-up’s Tally Software allows seafood producers to digitize their workflows and collect data in real-time on the factory floor, ultimately strengthening traceability practices and eliminating paperwork pangs, according to ThisFish.

Of the more than 90 Canadian start-ups that applied to compete, nine finalists were chosen to present before a virtual audience of agricultural leaders, investors, and entrepreneurs: AGvisorPRO, Healthy Cow, Impactful Health R&D, Index Biosystems, Lucent BioSciences, Neupeak Robotics, SoilOptix, ThisFish Inc., and Vertité.

A panel of judges chose ThisFish Inc. as the winner of the challenge, which is part of THRIVE's Global Initiative aimed at ensuring “the needed transformations in Canada’s food value chain as highlighted in the U.N.’s Sustainable Development Goals,” THRIVE SVG Ventures said.

ThisFish Inc. will receive USD 15,000 (EUR 12,333) to go toward travel expenses to participate in a Silicon Valley start-up bootcamp. The start-up is also invited to pitch at the THRIVE VII Accelerator Finals, and is automatically accepted as a Samsung Extreme Tech Challenge (XTC) finalist.
