Seafood Analytics launches new electronic fish monitoring device
Technology company Seafood Analytics has launched its new Fishboard electronic fish-monitoring device, which allows for researchers, seafood farmers, processors, at-sea observers, fishermen, and other seafood industry professionals to efficiently measure and store important electronic information about the fish they acquire, process and sell.
Implementers of Fishboard will be able to use the device to “quickly and easily assess length, weight, health, condition, and degradation status and body composition of individual fish,” Seafood Analytics said. Moreover, the technology provides its users with real-time measurements and immediate storage of all information to help facilitate dynamic decision-making. These stored values can be can be used for comparisons, growth trends, reports, and analysis, while real-time data can be used for immediate evaluation of individual fish health and growth, the company explained.
Fishboard can also be customized to include GPS, pictures, and other data, making it the “first device to market with all of these capabilities,” according to Seafood Analytics. The device, which was developed by Seafood Analytics’ Chief Scientific Officer Keith Cox while on assignment with the National Marine Fisheries Service in Alaska, caters to the current needs of seafood’s complex supply chain and fisheries management paradigm.
“Fishboard addresses pressing fisheries management and seafood supply chain needs by providing a means to measure fish and seafood that enables effective management and sustainability of marine and aquaculture resources,” said Cox.
Funding for Fishboard’s research and development was provided by the North Pacific Research Board (NPRB). Seafood Analytics, which is part of Certified Quality Foods, introduced the device to market at this year’s Seafood Expo North America event, held in Boston, Massachusetts from 11 to 13 March.
