Regal Springs announces plans to use blockchain for full traceability

Regal Springs has announced plans to use blockchain technology to support the full traceability of its “Naturally Better Tilapia” range, making it the first aquaculture whitefish producer to do so.

The project, according to Regal Springs, started last year, and is the first continuous aquaculture whitefish supply chain to use blockchain technology at scale. The technology – which is being developed through a partnership with blockchain technology firm SIM– will allow the company to have full-chain traceability, which will support unique storylines that will be featured on the product in-store.

The decision is one part of the larger “WE CARE” sustainability initiative, which debuted alongside the new Naturally Better Tilapia back on 5 March

“Although Regal Springs is a vertically integrated whitefish business with complete knowledge of the provenance of our Naturally Better Tilapia, we took a business decision when we launched our WE CARE Totally Integrated Sustainability Program, that we will continue to push the boundaries of our Tilapia category development leadership,” Achim Eichenlaub, CEO of Regal Springs Group, said. “Traceability is understandably a proof point for many who cannot see their food being produced at source. By improving the level and type of transparency, we hope to see that Blockchain Technology will improve consumer confidence in the product. Consumers are more aware than ever of digital applications, so we will be interested to see how this evolves.”

The company is “at a very advanced stage in the Blockchain process,” according to Petra Weigl, general manager for Regal Springs Europe.

“Blockchain is a logical next step for Regal Springs to authenticate the origin of our fish in a new way,” Weigl said. “I am delighted that the business chose Regal Springs Europe to test the process. We have been partnering with European industry leaders in Blockchain Technology, SIM, since last year to pioneer this new area of product integrity and transparency for Aquaculture into the Dutch retail market.”

Regal Springs is exhibiting the new Naturally Better Tilapia at Seafood Expo Global in Hall 9, at Stand #4353.
