Ocean Brands widens portfolio of MSC-certified canned seafood options
Richmond, British Columbia, Canada-based Ocean Brands has achieved 100 percent Marine Stewardship Council certification for its Ocean’s skipjack tuna.
The achievement has given Ocean Brands the widest range of MSC-certified products in Canada’s canned seafood category, it said in a press release.
“There is still so much work to do when it comes to managing our fisheries. As we take from our natural environment, we also have an obligation and a commitment to ensure the vitality of our oceans for years to come,” Ocean Brands President Ian Ricketts said. “Our longstanding partnership with MSC and the certification of our Ocean’s Skipjack Tuna are a testament to how we are investing back into the management of the fisheries that are depended upon by so many nations. We applaud those who have taken these steps towards sustainability before us, and we look forward to other brands making this same commitment. Our collective efforts are needed to secure the future of our oceans.”
In 2021, Ocean Brands boosted the MSC-certified seafood part of its product portfolio from 11 percent to 40 percent. With the certification of Ocean’s skipjack tuna, Ocean Brands upped its product portfolio to 70 percent MSC-certified. The company produces canned seafood through its Ocean’s, Gold Seal, and Millionaires brands.
Ocean Brands achieved B-Certified Corporation status in 2019, and has the goal to “Actively demonstrate its goal of protecting and preserving oceans for future generations by providing a wider range of sustainable Ocean’s products at affordable prices.”
