Maine lobster company plans major Boston expansion
Maine Coast, a live lobster wholesaler based in York, Maine, announced a major expansion into Boston at Seafood Expo North America (SENA) on Sunday, 6 March.
The company announced plans to build a facility at the Boston Fish Pier designed to hold 20,000 lbs. of live lobster to enable it to increase the speed it can ship its product out of Boston’s Logan Airport, according to an announcement made at SENA by Maine Coast founder and CEO Tom Adams.
“This is a strategic move for us. Our Boston location will allow us to increase our world-class customer service by offering our domestic and international customers rapid-ship capabilities out of Boston’s Logan Airport,” Adams said. “We will also be able to provide our New England customers with specialized service from this facility.”
Maine Coast, founded in 2011, exceeded USD 40 million (EUR 36.5 million) in sales in 2015 and projects increased growth in 2016, according to Adams.
“The industry has expanded in the last several years and I know that in order to remain competitive, I need to reinvest in my company,” he said. “I am confident that the Fish Pier location, coupled with our increased marketing and banding efforts, will help Maine Coast achieve additional sales worldwide.”
The Boston facility, which Adams said he anticipated will open in June 2016, will complement Maine Coast’s headquarters in York, which holds 150,000 lbs. of lobster and employs 30 workers year-round. Maine Coast will add six additional employees at its Boston location, beginning with the hiring of a general manager.
