In December 2018, the Japanese Diet enacted the most significant reform of its fisheries laws in 70 years. Since then, stakeholders from various sectors are engaged in active conversations to set details of the implementation plan. The recent pandemic of COVID-19 showed the vulnerability of the global seafood supply chains, which highlighted the importance of domestic seafood resources in Japan.

In this session, seafood experts from different sectors discuss:

  • How the new fisheries laws improve the sustainability of the domestic seafood production in Japan;
  • How the regulations are implemented;
  • What are the roles of industry and government as Japan moves forwards with its sustainable seafood journey.

This presentation was a part of the Seafood2030 Virtual Sustainability Forum | Aligning Industry and Government Sustainability Efforts, which took place from 9-10 September 2020.  For more information on Seafood2030 and/or to access additional program content, visit SeafoodSource.com/Seafood2030.
