Globus, Dutch Fish Federation representatives say seafood consumption is declining in Europe
Soaring production costs, declining exchange rates, and higher consumer and producer price indexes may force a reckoning when it comes to recent gains in global seafood consumption, according to Turenhout, a fisheries and trade expert with the Dutch Fish Federation (Visfederatie) and a member of the E.U. Fish Processors and Traders Association (AIPCE-CEP).
“Consumers have less to spend and that’s visible in the demand for seafood in the short-term. I expect we will have to pay more for the basics in the near future – food, mobility, healthcare, etcetera – and the question is how does seafood fit into this picture?” he said. “I think, and we are already seeing this happening a little, there will be a decrease in seafood consumption. There will be less demand and that will affect prices. My expectation is ... "
