Health, nutrition, and bioscience company Royal DSM has introduced the Digital SalmoFan, a portable device for measuring the color of salmon fillets.

The Digital SalmoFan is intended for use by the salmon industry value chain, including feed producers, farmers, processors, and retailers. It scores the coloration of salmon fillets according to a numeric scoring system using a handheld device. It builds on the Heerlen, Netherlands-based company’s SalmoFan line of products.

DSM Global Aqua Marketing Head Benedict Standen said the new product is “portable, compact, and easy to use anywhere, without any light interference.”

“In DSM, we are committed to unleashing the power of aquaculture by delivering innovative science-backed solutions for optimum nutrition and health,” Standen said. “The Digital SalmoFan enables the industry to maximize the value of color providing a credible, reliable, and consistent reference point across the value chain.”

The Digital SalmoFan can be used with an app that can gather, store, and share data collected from color measurements taken by the instrument.

G.O. Johnsen Nutrition and Health Solutions Aqua Global Director Fabio Cervellione Director Nutrition & Health Solutions Aqua Global at G.O. Johnsen, said the SalmoFan provides “one language of color, anytime, an-place.”

“By introducing Digital SalmoFan, DSM enables the entire value chain to measure fillet color (at scale) accurately and objectively,” Cervellione said. “Farmers, feed producers, processors, and retailers can now move their pigmentation programs into the digital era, optimizing color management and being able to capture greater value from fillet color.”

Royal DSM has also seen recent success with its SalmoSim salmon digestion simulator and its Sustell environmental lifecycle assessment service.
