Chinese salmon processor sees Hong Kong as platform to sales, Southeast Asia
Hong Kong used to be the gateway to mainland China for exports of premium products like salmon. Now the traffic has been reversed, with a Dalian, China-based importer and processor of salmon seeking to increase sales of salmon in the city.
Dalian Huayang Food Co. wants to use Hong Kong as a gateway to the Southeast Asia market for salmon, CEO Sun Le Qing told SeafoodSource at this month’s Seafood Expo Asia event in Hong Kong. The company spent the past week at the exhibition meeting with buyers from the Southeast Asia region, according to Qing.
China’s salmon demand has spiked in recent years, but a raft of processing facilities makes Dalian Huayang well-positioned to seek supply deals in Southeast Asia where such facilities are lacking. The bulk of Dalian Huayang’s salmon supply is from Chile, explained Sun. His firm also imports Greenland halibut into China, and exports to Russia, the United States, and to the European Union.
