Canada’s largest deep-sea trawler in the works for 2022
Clearwater Seafoods and Ocean Prawns AS have commissioned a new Arctic factory freezer trawler, designed by Norway’s Skipsteknisk and set to be constructed by Tersan Shipyard in Turkey for the end of 2022.
The new coldwater shrimp vessel will be built using Skipsteknisk’s ST-119 design and is set to become the largest deep-sea trawler bearing the Canadian flag, according to a press release from the shipbuilding firm.
The overall length of the vessel will measure out to 82.3 meters, with a 18-meter beam, Skipsteknisk said. The ship’s freezer hold capacity will accommodate approximately 3,000 cubic meters and be arranged for pallets at two levels, the company noted. Spacious living arrangements for up to 35 people will be available aboard the vessel as well.
“The factory trawler will be outfitted with an advanced factory for processing and freezing shrimps and turbot (Greenland halibut). New robotics solutions in factory has been developed aiming to eliminate risky and demanding labor operations,” Skipsteknisk said in its press release.
Skipsteknisk explained that the vessel will be built at high ice class under Polar Code requirements, allowing for “optimal energy utilization and minimal emissions to water and air.”
This marks the third time that Ocean Prawns and Skipsteknisk have formed a partnership – in 1997, the “Ocean Tiger” was at Soviknes Yard, and in 2002, the “Atlantic Enterprise” built at Aker Langsten. Both the Ocean Tiger and the Atlantic Enterprise are still in operation.
