Description:

Small-scale fishing communities are among the 54 percent of people living below the poverty line in Peru, even though the sector is the country's second highest generator of foreign currency. The increasing demand for seafood coupled with lower prices received for their catch require fishers to increase their harvest volume, thereby placing a burden on stocks and marine ecosystems.

Sustainable Fisheries Trade offers small-scale fishermen logistical and commercial support to offer their catch directly from the dock to the customer. SFT provides fishermen with a traceability tool that records the extraction zone, the disembarkation location, the type of fishing, and transportation duration. The information can be verified by each actors of the Supply Chain.

Simone Pisu, CEO of Sustainable Fisheries Trade, will discuss how building markets for local, sustainable seafood is addressing poverties in coastal communities in Peru and Chile.
