Atlantic Fisheries strikes agreement with Mar Andino to market steelhead trout in North America
Atlantic Fisheries, LLC, the fresh division of the Miami, Florida, U.S.A.-based Sea Delight Group, has struck an agreement with Mar Andino Perú S.A.C. (MAPSAC) to market its steelhead trout in the United States and Canada.
MAPSAC raises steelhead trout in floating cages in Lake Choclococha and Lake Punrun, in a remote area of Peru. MAPSAC operates three farm sites, in addition to a processing plant in Lima, Peru.
“We look forward to working with the team at Atlantic Fisheries, LLC,” MAPSAC Executive President Eduardo Kipreos said in a press release. “We are confident that their knowledge of the North American fresh and frozen seafood market will help us expand our Mar Andino brand and introduce a high-quality farm-raised product not only in Canada, but also in the U.S.A.”
The company does not use antibiotics in its farming and is phasing out the use of antibiotics in its hatcheries, with a plan to be antibiotic-free by 2021.
“Our customers not only care about our high-quality seafood products, but also care about the impact sourcing practices have on our environment and the people that fish and farm these products,” Atlantic Fisheries President Eugenio Sánchez said. “We are excited to collaborate with Mar Andino because their innovative farming techniques have allowed them to produce a superior product with low impact in the environment while contributing to the local community’s livelihoods. Their farming operations have provided employment opportunities to more than 200 Quechua members in the surrounding community. They have also contributed to infrastructure development, thus providing child-care services as well as technical assistance in the raising of Alpacas, another important protein of commercial value in this community.”
Atlantic Fisheries will be offering samples of the trout to visitors at its booth at Seafood Expo North America, taking place 17 to 19 March in Boston, Massachusetts. Atlantic Fisheries and Sea Delight will be located at Booth #3323 at the expo.
