Norwegian salmon prices drop 7 percent to USD 10.32 per-kilo average

The average per-kilo price of farmed Norwegian Atlantic salmon declined 7.26 percent, or NOK 8.53 (USD 0.81, EUR 0.74), over the past week, reaching an average of NOK 108.97 (USD 10.32, EUR 9.50) in the 23rd week of 2023.

The price is down from the NOK 117.50 (USD 11.13, EUR 10.25) reported last week.

The Nasdaq Salmon Index weekly price sales update reports the total weighted average index of prices for fresh, head-on gutted Atlantic superior salmon sourced from Norway. Over the past four weeks, the average price has risen 5.71 percent, or NOK 5.89 (USD 0.56, EUR 0.51), but in the last 12 weeks, the price declined 14.38 percent, or NOK 18.30 (USD 1.73, EUR 1.60).

The total volume of Norwegian salmon sold over the past week was 3,652.8 MT, consisting of an estimated 963,400 individiual salmon weighing an average of 3.79 kilograms.

The index reported 2- to 3-kilogram fish accounted for 9.74 percent of all sales and were sold for a per-kilo average of NOK 90.55 (USD 8.58, EUR 7.90), while 3- to 4-kilo salmon were 27.49 percent all fish sold, for a per-kilo average of NOK 105.21 (USD 9.97, EUR 9.17). In the 4- to 5-kilogram category, 25.97 percent of all sales, the average price decreased 3.13 percent to NOK 113.55 (USD 10.75, EUR 9.90). Fish between 5 and 6 kilograms, representing 21.3 percent of all sales, hit an average per-kilo price of NOK 121.18 (USD 11.48, EUR 10.57) down 6.31 percent.

Norway has exported 81,299 MT of Atlantic salmon thus far in 2023. In week 23, it exported 18,299 MT, up from 13,618 MT in the same week a year ago and up 2,633 MT from week 22.

The index has forward prices for July listed at NOK 100.90 (USD 9.56, EUR 8.80) per kilo, declining to NOK 78.30 (USD 7.41, EUR 6.82) for August, and NOK 75.80 (USD 7.18, EUR 6.61) for September. Forward prices for Q3 2023 declined to NOK 81.70 (USD 7.71, EUR 7.12) and NOK 83.30 (USD 7.89, EUR 7.26) for Q4 2023. The forward price for Q1 and Q2 2024 was NOK 100.08 (USD 9.40, EUR 8.68) and it was NOK 84.92 (USD 7.97, EUR 7.37) for Q3 and Q4 2024, Fish Pool reported.
