For the second year in a row, Puerto Montt, Chile-based salmon farmer Multiexport Foods has been invited to form part of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI), one of the most important rankings when it comes to environmental and social governance (ESG) issues, the company announced in a statement.

Multiexport Foods improved its ranking 6 percentage points when compared to last year’s version of companies with the best sustainability management in the “Food Products” industrial sector. The recognition comes just a few days after Multiexport was included in Coller FAIRR 2020, another important ESG indicator that reviews the main protein-producing companies, in which the salmon company ranked fifteenth globally.

“This [DJSI] recognition is the result of the seriousness and work with which we have approached sustainability in the company,” Multiexport Foods Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Manager Francisco Lobos said. “In this version, we managed to improve both in percentile and in the general score, reaching 21st place in the world ranking of companies in the Food, Beverages, and Tobacco field, which makes us happy and confirms that we are making progress in the right direction."

DJSI Industry leaders are the top-performing companies in each of the 61 industries represented in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices as of 13 November, 2020. The DJSI Industry Leader Reports provide an overview of the industry leader’s performance in the SAM Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA) relative to other companies in the industry at the dimension and criteria level.

Other fishing and aquaculture companies included on the DJSI list include Norway’s Mowi and Salmar; Denmark’s Bakkafrost; Chile’s Blumar, Salmones Camanchaca, and Compañía Pesquera Camanchaca; and Peru’s Grupo Austral.

In October, Multiexport announced that its general manager, Andrés Lyon, will take on other responsibilities in the company and be replaced by food industry executive Cristián Swett. After 10 years and what the company said was an “outstanding performance” at the helm of Multiexport Foods, Lyon will take on the role of director and vice president of Salmones Multiexport SA – the operating subsidiary of Multiexport Foods – beginning on 1 February 2021, to support the company’s strategic direction and future development.

The move “seeks to strengthen the executive and management team to carry out the new challenges facing the company and the salmon farming sector,” Multiexport said at the time.

Founded in 1987, Multiexport Foods has more than 2,400 employees and handles over 100,000 tons of salmon a year, with productive activities in southern Chile’s Regions IX, X, XI, and XII. It is present throughout the salmon production chain, from reproduction to distribution to the final customer in more than 30 countries.
