Salmon Scotland recruits six new members
Aquaculture trade body Salmon Scotland has increased its membership to 41, with six new supply chain businesses joining in the last three months.
Having expanded its reach to cover more of the farmed salmon supply chain, Salmon Scotland’s membership has more than tripled since the start of 2022.
With a geographical spread from Dumfriesshire to Shetland, and across the central belt from Broxburn to Cumbernauld, the six new members are Moulded Foams, Intership, Ocean Farm Services, VAI Consulting, Packaging Solutions Scotland, and Solway Transport.
Salmon Scotland CEO Tavish Scott said the organization’s continued expansion shows how vital the success of farm-raised salmon is to the U.K. economy.
“While our producers in coastal communities are at the heart of our sector, the supply chain extends well beyond this – to cities and towns across Scotland and beyond,” he said. “Thousands of jobs in a huge array of different roles all contribute to the extraordinary success of Scottish salmon, which is more important than ever as the economic storm clouds gather.”
In July, Salmon Scotland confirmed nine new members, with Elanco, Fjord Maritime, O’Toole Transport, PatoGen, Sølvtrans, STIM, Sundolitt Ltd., Vónin, and World Feeds joining the body’s ranks, following the announcement of 12 new members in April.
According to Salmon Scotland, the sector adds more than GBP 760 million (USD 857.2 million, EUR 871.2 million) to the U.K. economy every year. At the same time, it spends GBP 370 million (USD 417.2 million, EUR 424.1 million), supporting over 3,600 suppliers across Scotland. An estimated 2,500 people are directly employed in salmon farming throughout the country, with 10,000 jobs dependent on the sector.
In addition to accounting for more than GBP 500 million (USD 563.7 million, EUR 573.2 million) worth of fish sales across the U.K. retail market annually, Scottish farmed salmon is the country’s most-valuable food export, with products shipped to more than 50 countries.
