Christiansfield, Denmark-based aquaculture feed producer Aller Aqua A/S has confirmed that its CO2-equivalent emissions were reduced by 17 percent over the past year.

In 2021 August Aller Aqua became the first fish feed company to be verified to label its entire product portfolio CO2-equivalents according to the European Commission’s Product environmental footprint category rules (PEFCR) standard. The company recently re-verified its carbon footprint labeling methodology.

In a press release, the company said the implemented methodology and the actual numbers of its raw materials and feed for 2022 are verified by third-party certification body Bureau Veritas before the global warming potentials (GWPs) of the feed are published on datasheets and labels.

These figures will be updated once a year, followed by an internal audit of data quality and external verification.

According to Aller Aqua, the verified CO2 numbers will ensure its focus on emissions.

“From here we can start making choices and help develop the entire aquaculture sector to grow in a continuously sustainable direction while encouraging transparency,” the press release said, adding that recent initiatives, such as switching raw material suppliers to those with lower environmental impact, have proven more cost-effective and sustainable.

“We are always looking for ways to improve our operations so that the entire value chain and the environment in which we live can benefit. We encounter situations in the course of our everyday business that call for difficult decisions that will ultimately lead to better outcomes, and so we act.'” Aller Aqua Group Vice President Anders Bylling said.
